Candelilla wax occurs as the outer coating of a shrub that grows in the deserts of northern Mexico.

The process to obtain the wax consists of heating the plant and adding sulfuric acid to skim off the wax. The resulting crude candelilla is remelted, filtered and bleached.
Colour range varies from yellow to brownish.
